6 Best Cache Plugins WordPress (How to Speed Up a Website)
In the last few months, have you realized that your competitors’ sites are much faster and rank better on search engines? Probably because they use good hosting or because they use one of the cache plugins that you will find in today’s guide.
However, before moving directly to the 7 best plugins, we have created a small introduction to explain to everyone what cache plugins are and what they are for. In case you are not interested you could skip this explanation.
When you created or when they developed the site, it was most likely empty or in any case with little content. Over time you will have added many articles, products or worse still many plugins.
All of these factors cause your website to get slower and slower. In fact, if you go online to some WooCommerce store and test their speeds using these two tools GTmetrix and PageSpeed , you will notice that they are slower than a site with a Landing Page.
This all happens for reasons explained above. The best WordPress cache plugins try to overcome this problem.
Every time a user accesses your website, the site has to make dozens of requests (the fewer requests the better). Each request has a weight and this weight is uploaded via the internet. So the fewer requests a website has, the faster it is because it has to load fewer things.
Cache plugins understand which content is always loaded the same way and make sure that it no longer needs to be reloaded. If you think about it as the page-to-page text changes, Header and Footer always stay the same.
Some cache plugins may make sure that those contents are already preloaded. Beyond that almost all plugins will offer you Lazy Loading (meaning images will only load when a user sees them).
All these great features will definitely speed up your website by 20-80%.
I would like to tell you these last two things and after that let’s go!
Amazon, in 2012, discovered that an extra second of loading equals a loss of $ 1.6 billion, knowing that Amazon had 10 times less revenue at that time, you can understand why it is so important.
According to a study by NeilPatel, over 40% of visitors will abandon your website if it loads in more than 3 seconds.
Wp-Rocket is the best WordPress cache plugin, it has many more features than other plugins and increases performance by up to 70% in some cases (case studies with some of our customers). It is a very frequently updated plugin, the design is attractive while the support is great.
In September they added the Preload feature, which allows you to preload content while the user navigates the page. This feature does not speed up the loading of the page itself, but loads the other pages within the article faster than 60% (approximately).
Other really interesting settings are compatibility with CDNs like ClaudFlare . You can turn off WordPress Heart Rate, but don’t expect much of a performance boost with this feature.
LiteSpeed Cache is a plugin that tries to challenge Wp-rocket and to tell the truth, in some cases it succeeds in its intent. Once downloaded and installed you will find yourself in front of a modern and understandable dashboard even by the less experienced.
This plugin is compatible with WordPress Multisite, for some it is fantastic news. Besides that it is compatible with WooCommerce, BBPress and Yoast SEO.
Ultimately the plugin works very well, and the difference with WP Rocket was not very visible, apart from certain functions. For example with WP Rocket if I am on one page and going to another happens much earlier because it has the page preloading.
In general, however, our site did not have any specific problems. So we recommend this plugin in case you don’t want to pay for Wp-rocket.
Free QUIC.cloud CDN cache
It supports Memcached
Image optimization (Lossless / Lossy)
Delay in the execution of the CSS / JS
Combine CSS / JS
HTTPS 2/3 support
Lazyload of images
Cleaning the dstabase
OPcode + cache support
Compatibility with Cloudflare and Multisite
Best for: Those who don’t want WP Rocket due to the price.
W3 Total Cache is one of the most popular WordPress cache plugins, with over a million active installs. This Plugin in some cases works wonders, but for most users it would not be convenient to use it.
In fact, it is the plugin with the most functions on the market, but there are so many that you practically need an expert to add them to your site properly, online there are hundreds of tutorials that explain how to activate and what not.
I don’t think it’s a good choice for beginners. But, if you have a lot of time at your disposal, you might want to give it a try. As I said before, in some cases it beats Wp-rocket but they are really rare and often exceeds in a test during a day, but then again the test could be slower.
W3 Total Cache improves your site’s SEO and user experience by increasing performance and reducing load times by leveraging features like CDN and the latest best practices.
WP Fastest Cache is a plugin that is especially suitable for beginners, it has over 1 million active installs which makes it the third most used plugin on the list. It has all the functions to ensure that the site is stored correctly.
As already mentioned, the configuration is very simple and it is not necessary to make any changes to the .htacces files. Besides that it comes with Lazy Load, for images, you can disable Emoji and there are many other interesting options.
However, I advise against it over the plugins above, it is true that it is easy to set up, but it is not worth it. I think it is better to choose a suitable and more powerful plugin.
WP Super Cache is a completely free plugin and I think that is its real plus point. In fact, once installed you will find a fairly simple design even if not height of plugins such as Wp Rocket and LiteSpeed Cache.
It has pretty much all the features an average user might need.
SG Optimizer is the official SiteGround plugin a hosting that we currently use ourselves. In fact this is also the plugin we currently use for technical reasons.
I can assure you that it works really well, the only flaw is that it does not offer the same performance as Wp Rocket but slightly lower.
It offers so many features and the design is truly amazing. I advise you to use it, however, if your site has Siteground as a hosting provider, otherwise you would not have all the advantages that we have obtained.
This plugin is completely free, I think the most interesting feature is Lazy Load which is really well done! In fact, it allows you to decide if you want to have assets:
Lazy Load of iframes
Lazy Load of videos
Lazy Load of the Gravatars
Lazy Load of Thumbnails
Lazy Load of responsive images
Lazy Load of Widgets
Lazy Load for furniture
Fix for Lazy Load Short Codes
No plugin in the ranking has all this choice and trust me the Lazy Load really speeds up a website. But this plugin does not stop there in fact there are other options!
Optimization of new images
Generate WebP copies of new images
Automatic cache cleaning
WordPress Heart Rate Optimization
Postpone the JS view block
Merge CSS files
Ideal for: those who have SiteGround as hosting
Today we saw the top 6 cache plugins, each of them had good and bad sides.
However, we believe the best plugin on the list is WP Rocket.
